House. C18, refronted in early to mid C19. Stucco scored to
imitate ashlaring; right return of painted cobbles, chimney
breast of brick. Half-hipped roof over front section, its long
axis perpendicular to front wall, that to rear smaller; both
of tile.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys over basement. 2-window range. When
refronted the house was given the appearance of a Regency
terraced house. The second storey projects above the eaves
line of the original structure to terminate in a horizontal
parapet so as to mask the half-hipped roof from the front
only. On the right return one sees something of the C18 house:
cobbles, windows with brick dressings and a brick dentil
cornice. The latter feature can also be found on the other
return, where there is a flat-arched entrance set into the
rear wing, facing East Street. All windows are flat arched.
There are sashes of early to mid C19 design on the main
elevation: 8/8 to first-floor windows and 6/6 sliding sashes
to the second-floors; the shutters date to the C20. There is a
C20 dormer to the rear section. Of special note is the shop
front, Italianate in style and dating to the mid C19.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
Nos 26-31 and 33-36 East Street (qv) face onto what is, in
effect, a small square, which is formed by the widening of
East Street at its northern end. Legend has it that the whole
group was built on the site of a small wharf on an inlet of
sea.
