and attached railings

GV II

Terraced house, converted into offices. c1830. Designed by
Amon Henry Wilds. Stucco. Roof obscured by parapet.
EXTERIOR: 4 storeys over half basement. 3-window range. The
entire front is slightly curved. Steps up to segmental-arched
entrance at the left party-wall and set under shallow prostyle
porch of fluted Doric columns and entablature. Ground floor
treated as banded rustication, pierced by 2 windows. Windows
to the basement, ground, second and third floors are
flat-arched with projecting sills, all having deep reveals;
sashes of original design to second-floor windows, 3 x 6, and
third-floor windows, 3 x 3. First-floor window have sashes of
original design with vertical margin lights; these open onto a
balcony supported by cast-iron brackets and enclosed by
cast-iron railings. 4 giant pilasters on high socles applied
to first, second and third floors; the capitals of these are
free interpretations of the Composite order, with Ammonite
shells taking the place of volutes. This unusual order is a
signature feature of works by Wilds, being a visual pun
derived from the architect's first name. Entablature to the
giant pilastrade topped by a pierced parapet. Stack to party
wall.
INTERIOR: not inspected. Railings to stair and area.
Nos 20-31 (qv) form a group.
