Terraced houses. Built over several years from 1849. By Amon
Henry Wilds. These houses constitute the western, 2-storey
range of Park Crescent, matching the eastern 2-storey range at
Nos 33-48 (qv). Stucco, roofs of slate.
EXTERIOR: 2 and 3 storeys over basement, 3 windows each. The
standard design of the entrance front, facing into Park
Crescent Terrace, is as follows: entrance bay slightly set
back and paired with that of the adjoining house; flat-arched
entrance with moulded architrave, moulded cornice, overlight
and panelled door of original design; quoins between the
entrance bay and the rest; all windows flat-arched with
moulded architraves; the middle window on the first floor
blank; sashes generally of original design, 4/4 on ground
floor, 2/2 to first floor; console brackets to eaves with a
frieze of wreaths between; deep boxed eaves.
Cast-iron area railings with spearhead finials.
On the garden side, the principal wings are of 2 storeys with
flat-arched windows having moulded architraves, bracketed
eaves with wreathed cornice, and hipped roof; the 3-storey
tower bays are altered on the ground and first floors in many
cases and have similar eaves and cornice treatment, with
pedimented gables; sashes of original design are very common
on this side, some with margin lights.
Low garden wall of stucco with panelled piers and iron
railings between.
Features of note on individual houses are: No.1 has an
entrance bay not set back, and a chamfered wing facing south,
whose ground floor is decorated with banded and chamfered
rustication, the flat-arched windows having no architraves and
the left-hand window on the first floor blank; the 3-storey
'tower' to No.1 has flat-arched windows with moulded
architraves to the ground and first floor, and round-arched
windows to the second floor; quoins to the sides; bracketed
and wreathed eaves; stuccoed side stack in Park Crescent
Terrace; small, flat-arched window introduced to left of
entrance. No.6 lacks a panelled door of original design and
has a tiled roof. No.7 lacks a panelled door of original
design. No 9 has central first-floor window. Nos 13 and 16
have 2 pedimented dormers each. A very unusual and distinctive
design.
