Lamp post, in front of Nos.1 and 2

Gas standard in front of Nos 1 and 2 St James's Place (qv).
Designed in the 1880s, possibly cast as late as 1930; adapted
for electric light in late C19 or early C20. Cast-iron and
another metal. Octagonal, panelled socle serves as base for
octagonal, tapering shaft, panelled to match base; simple
coved capital. Single maintenance arm. Tudor in style. Timing
mechanism above, marked BLEECO, forms a base for swan-neck,
tubular bracket, which is braced by a metal fillet in the form
of a tendril. Shallow dish reflector.
