Villa. Dated 1856 in deeds with later additions and
alterations including c1900 bay windows and extension to rear.
Developer, Matthew Wise; builder, Charles Wincote; first
owner, Algernon Sydney Field. Pinkish-yellow brick with
painted stucco front facade and Welsh slate roof. Central
hallway plan.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys, 3 first-floor windows. Central hallway
plan. Quoins alternately vermiculated; plinth. 2 steps to
central entrance a 4-fielded-panel door with cambered
overlight in surround with fielded Tuscan pilasters,
architrave, frieze and cornice. Canted bays have 1/1 sashes
with tooled surrounds and sills. First floor, continuous
moulded sill band, projecting below windows. 1/1 sashes with
margin-lights in plain reveals and with sills. Wide eaves with
modillions. End and rear stacks.
INTERIOR: open newel staircase with onion-on-bobbin balusters.
Cornices, fireplaces to ground and first floors.
HISTORICAL NOTE: Algernon Sydney Field lived formerly and
continued to occupy offices at No.42 Warwick Street (qv).
Forms an architectural group of villas with Nos 12, 14 and
18-26 (even) Avenue Road (qqv).
