Royal Assembly Rooms and then the Royal Music Hall, known as
The Parthenon, now shops. c1821 by Samuel Beazley, London
theatre architect and dramatist for R Elliston, the manager of
the Drury Lane Theatre. Facades restored and repaired after
1960s fire damage, rebuilt to rear, late C20 ground-floor shop
fronts. Brick with painted stucco front facades, unpainted to
left (No.50) and Welsh slate roof with cast-iron balcony to
centre range.
EXTERIOR: central range of 4 storeys, 5 first-floor windows,
between symmetrical ranges of 3 storeys, 1 first-floor window.
Central range projects and has quoins to angles; first floor
has 6-pane French windows with divided overlights in taller,
tooled, round-arched architraves. Second floor: 6/6 sashes
with sills. Third floor: 3/6 radial-headed sashes with sills.
Between second and third floors an inscription panel with
'PARTHENON' in raised letters. Dentil frieze, cornice. Side
ranges: first floor has tall tripartite window, 6/6 between
2/2 sashes in taller, cambered arched reveals. Second floor:
tripartite window, 6-pane centre with 2-pane side-lights. All
windows in plain reveals. Frieze, cornice, low parapet. Glazed
entrances in plate-glass shop-fronts to ground floor.
Continuous balcony to first floor, central range has
round-arched arcade.
