Pair of houses, now flats and attached railings. c1828-1832
with later alterations. Pinkish-brown brick with painted
stucco facade, Welsh slate roof and cast-iron railings.
EXTERIOR: 4 storeys with basement, 6 first-floor windows,
arranged 3-3, the outer bays project slightly to second
storey. Horizontal rustication to ground floor and basement,
first-floor band surmounted by giant, fluted Corinthian
pilasters through first and second floors.
First floor: 10-pane French window with margin-lights with
pilastered surround and consoles supporting pediment.
Otherwise unequally-hung 15-pane sashes with continuous frieze
interrupted between third and fourth windows and with pilaster
strips between. Each window has further individual frieze and
cornice, with pediment to that to right.
Second floor: 3/6 sashes throughout with plain reveals and
tooled architraves, eared to 4 centre windows. Remains of
blind boxes to 3 windows to right. Dentil frieze; acanthus
modillions to outer bays; cornice.
Third floor: fielded pilaster strips to outer bays. 3/6 sashes
throughout. Cornice, blocking course. Ground floor: end
entrances (alike): 6 and 4 steps to 6-panel door with 2-pane
side-lights with elliptically-arched overlight with decorative
glazing bars and elliptical arch, within porch of Doric
pillars in antis with fluted, tapering Corinthian columns
between and engaged Doric pilasters; frieze, cornice, blocking
course.
6/6 sashes throughout. End and roof stacks.
INTERIOR: shutters to some rooms.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: area railings and to sides of porch have
fleur-de-lys finials.
HISTORICAL NOTE: a complete Square of stucco terraces,
Clarendon Square was laid out c1828 to the plans of PF
Robinson, architect, of Brook Street, Mayfair.
The houses were completed c1832, the gardens in the Square
were planted with trees in May 1830.
