Villa, now hotel and attached railings. c1824-1836 with later
additions and alterations including mid-C20 extension to rear
and right. Pinkish-brown brick with scored and painted stucco
facades, pebble-dashed to left return, Welsh slate roof and
cast-iron railings.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys with basement and attic to gable, 3
first-floor windows, with single-storey recessed range to
right. First floor: continuous band surmounted by Doric
pilasters to ends and between windows. 10-pane French windows
with margin-lights. Frieze, cornice, low parapet. Ground
floor, central entrance: 4 steps to 3-fielded-panel door with
fanlight with radial glazing within distyle Doric porch with
engaged pilasters and entablature with blocking course. Bow
windows to either side rise from basement and each has two 6/6
sashes per bow, blocking course. Right extension has 6/6 sash
with elliptical arch. End stacks. Continuous balcony to first
floor has circle-motif balustrade.
INTERIOR: central dogleg staircase has stick balusters,
modillion cornice to hall, slate fireplace to right room.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: area railings and to sides of porch have
triple-motif finials.
HISTORICAL NOTE: Portland Place was laid out 1823-4.
Nos 2-12 (even) Portland Place (qqv) form an architectural
group.
