(Formerly Listed as:

Brighton British Legion Club)

GV II

Terraced house, now Brighton British Legion Club. c1840.
Perhaps designed by Sir Charles Barry. Stucco. Roof of slate.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys and dormer over basement. 3 window-range.
Flat-arched entry with overlight, framed by Tuscan pilasters
and entablature. To left is single storey canted bay; each of
its 3 windows framed by Tuscan pilasters, the entablature
being a continuation of that over the entry. The entire ground
floor, bay and entry, are elevated above street level on a
terrace, formed out of a very wide basement area. This terrace
has a parapet wall pierced in places by pointed slits. Towards
the street the parapet steps down and is terminated by large
console brackets. At the basement level this terrace is
supported by 4 engaged and fluted Doric columns, each capped
with its own entablature block and a stele-like finial. There
is access to the basement area by French doors. All openings
are flat arched, most with sashes of an original design. The
top of the bay forms a porch, its balustrade pierced to form a
diminutive arcade. First-floor openings are set in
round-arched recesses, connected by a springing band, to form
a shallow arcade. Entablature to the second floor topped by a
roof parapet, with balustraded sections above each window
range below. One flat-arched dormer to the roof. Stacks to
party wall.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
Nos 68, 69, and 73-89 Marine Parade (qv) form a group with Nos
1-14 Royal Crescent (qv).
