Terraced houses. c1825. Probably designed by Amon Wilds and
Charles Augustin Busby.
EXTERIOR: 4 storeys over basement. 3 windows each. Stucco.
Roof obscured by parapet. Camber-arched entry to No.102 in
left return; round-arched entries to Nos 103 and 104 at party
and end walls of main elevations, that to No.102 has overlight
with decorative glazing. Banded rustication to ground floor;
each elevation treated as full-height and nearly full-width
segmental bay, all windows flat arched. Between each bay and
at the corners rise fluted Ionic pilasters from the first to
third floors; entablature and parapet above. 2 storey porch
across the group is supported by cast-iron Tuscan columns on
the ground floor, and cast-iron Tuscan columns on high socles
on the first floor; first floor glazed to form a solarium;
balcony to second floor; both first and second floors enclosed
by cast-iron railings. Each porch area is entered by a door in
the centre of the bay. Rustication applied to ground floor of
the left return, forming voussoirs and keystones to each of
the camber-arched windows; giant Ionic pilastrade of 3 bays on
the return. Stacks to end and party walls.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
Railings to entries, ground floor terraces, and areas. Next to
entry of No.103 there is a white plaque bearing the following
legend: "Here Lived and Died Sir Herbert Garden, J.P.,
Alderman and Freeman, Founder of Greater Brighton. Born 1867
Died 1941."
