Description

BRIGHTON

TQ3104SW MEETING HOUSE LANE
577-1/64/512 (South side)
20/08/71 No.43
(Formerly Listed as:
MEETING HOUSE LANE
Nos.41-53 (Consecutive))

GV II

House, now shop. C18. Stucco to ground floor and
weatherboarding to first, its short right return in brick.
Roof of tile.
2 storey. The first floor is jettied and terminates in a
facing gable. C20 shop front to the ground floor. Jetty
supported by 2 joists at either end of the front; that to the
right is bracketed. The only original feature visible from
inside the shop is an elliptical-arched doorcase to a rear
room. Tradition has it that this structure dates to the early
C17; although this early date is suggested by its outline,
general appearance and projection into Meeting House Lane,
what remains is very probably only slightly earlier than the
rest of the houses in this twitten. Iron shop sign to first
floor.
This building gives much character to the Meeting House Lane
and forms a most important group with Nos 1-12, 22-32, 36-41,
and 44-53 Meeting House Lane (qv), which is the centre of the
Old Town known as The Lanes.
(Carder T: The Encyclopaedia of Brighton: Lewes: 1990-: 115N).
