Smithy and boot shop with hayloft over and house, converted to
3 houses, now 2 houses. Probably C16 and C18 respectively with
later additions and alterations including rebuilding to front
facade c1800-35 and C20 extension to rear of The Old Boot
Shop. Middle House: small timber-framing with painted brick
infill and plain-tile roof. Single unit plan.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys; 2-window range. Plinth. Entrance to right
has 6-panelled door in moulded wood door frame. To left a
4-light C20 casement. First floor has 2 C20 casements. Rebuilt
left end stack.
The Old Bootshop: small timber-framing to rear, reddish brick
laid to Flemish bond to front and side facades, brick nogging,
on lias stone plinth, and with plain-tile roof. 3-unit plan. 2
storeys; 3 first-floor windows. Ground floor: 2 C20 entrances
and a bay window under continuous hood. Further multi-pane
casement under cambered arch. First floor: 3-light casement
and two 2-light metal casements in wood frames with metal
latches. Dentilled eaves cornice. Rear has notch in
timber-framing for support prop for use in building.
INTERIOR: inglenook fireplace with reused bressumer beam.
Chamfered spine beam. Reputed to have smoke-blackened timbers
to roof. Also roof reported to have one tie-beam truss with
collar, rafters, purlins and concave wind braces trenched into
purlins. From the stud head to the bressumer are stilted
braces. End wall has arched braces. A smithy was at the left
end.
All the listed items on The Green form a group.
