Building of the main part of the current abbey was begun around 1100 and was improved in the fourteenth century, owing to an endowment by the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Adam de Harvington. However, the abbey was partly demolished in 1540, during the reformation, such that only the south transept, choir and tower remain. Restoration was carried out in the 19th century by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott and the tower pinnacles and two flying buttresses were added in 1871.
