Pair of terraced houses and attached area railings to right. c1824-8 with later additions and alterations. Architect, probably John Forbes. Stucco over brick with concealed roof, stucco party-wall stacks. Double-depth plan with central hallways. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys, on basement at centre, 6 first-floor windows. First-floor band; crowning cornice and blocking course. 6/6 sashes in plain reveals and with sills. Central entrances, 4-panel doors, that to right with fanlight with batwing and circle motif to right (blocked in to left); further lower doorway at left with 4-panel door. Basement has 4/4 and 3/6 sashes. INTERIOR: noted as retaining original joinery, house to right has central hall with dogleg staircase with stick balusters and newel post with acorn finial. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: area railings to right have spearhead bars and dog-bars. HISTORICAL NOTE: the street was originally known as Montpellier Retreat.
