Villa, now nursing home. c1840-50. Builder probably Edward Cope. Stucco over brick with renewed tile roof, ridge and right end stacks. Tudor Gothic style.
EXTERIOR: two storeys with attics to gables and basement, three first-floor windows; end bays break forwards and are gabled; further ranges set back to returns, that to left is full-height and gabled. Stucco detailing includes hoodmoulds with label stops to most openings. Central entrance a four-panel door with sidelights and overlight within pointed-arched recess. Ground floor has four-light wooden mullion windows with two levels of transoms. First floor has similar three-light window to left, two-light window to centre and rectangular bay to right, 2/1 sashes. Attics to gables have pairs of 4/2 sashes, with skylight to centre. Concealed basement.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
HISTORICAL NOTE: The Circus was laid out in 1839-40 by Cope on land purchased from Joseph Pitt. However the basic layout of the Pittville Estate was designed by John Forbes.
