Villa, now flats. c1840-50. Builder probably Edward Cope.
Stucco over brick with hipped slate roof and stuccoed end and
ridge stacks with cornices.
PLAN: double depth with double pitch roof.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys and basement, 5 first-floor windows.
Centre window-bay recessed. Stucco detailing includes ornate
window jambs and wide sills on corbels to ground floor,
ground- and first-floor windows have cornices on consoles,
those to ground floor with tent hoods; first-floor windows
have decorative friezes and mounded sills on feet;
second-floor continuous sill band; crowning moulded frieze and
cornice with blocking course. Central former entrance has
steps to porch with 2 Ionic columns in antis, frieze and
cornice; within are part-glazed double doors (now fixed) with
sidelights and overlight. Further C20 entrance porch added to
right. 2/2 horizontal-pane sashes where original.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: continuous window boxes to ground floor
have rail and scroll motif supports.
HISTORICAL NOTE: The Circus was laid out in 1839-40 by Cope on
land purchased from Joseph Pitt. However the basic layout of
the Pittville Estate was designed by John Forbes.
