Pillar box. 1866-79. Cast-iron. Designed by JW Penfold.
Manufactured by Cochrane Grove Company of Dudley. Hexagonal
Letter box with elaborate leaf decorated crest and lettering
'VR'. Cheltenham has 8 of the 94 surviving Penfold type
Victorian pillar boxes reputed to remain in the country. There
are others in Bayshill Road (qv), College Lawn (qv), Douro
Road (qv), Evesham Road (qv), Lansdown Road (qv), Montpellier
Walk (qv) and St Paul's Road (qv).
