Terrace of 5 houses (now flats at left, No.45) and attached area railings. c1836-7. Probably designed by John Forbes and built by Thomas Millward, working directly for Pitt. Stucco over brick with concealed roof, brick & stucco end, party-wall & rear stacks; wrought- and iron balconies & railings. EXTERIOR: 3 storeys on basement, 15 first-floor windows (3 per house); centre and end houses break forwards. 2-storey, single-bay service ranges to rear. Stucco detailing includes continuous second-floor band; central breakforward has Doric pilasters to ends and two 3/4 engaged Ionic columns between windows, continuous crowning frieze, cornice and blocking course with copings, raised to centre; 2/2 horizontal-pane sashes and 6/6 sashes where original; all windows in plain reveals and with sills; windows to breakforwards in shallow, elliptically-arched recesses; 3 windows to 2nd. floor at left and to ground and first floors of No.49 in tooled architraves; blind boxes remain to some windows. Entrances to right: flights of 5 roll-edged steps to 5- and 6-panel doors (some part-glazed, and with lower flush panels), 3 to centre with overlights, the outer 2 with elliptically-arched lights with lozenge-shaped glazing bars. Rear: 2/2 horizontal-pane and 6/6 sashes remain. INTERIOR: not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: ironwork to No.49 by William Montague and Charles Church, ironmasters of Gloucester; continuous balconies have double lozenge motif. Area railings and to sides of steps have flattened spearheads. HISTORICAL NOTE: Built as part of the development of this area undertaken for Joseph Pitt in 1825-42, the general layout being designed by the architect John Forbes. A similar design to Nos 29-37 (odd) (qv) and Nos 59-67 (odd) (qv) Pittville Lawn; originally known as The Central Carriage Drive, the name Pittville Lawn was first given to the terraces now forming Nos 29-37 (odd) (qv), 45-53 (odd) and 59-67 (odd) (qv). All the listed buildings along Pittville Lawn form a distinguished architectural group.
