Bank. c1870. Cunliffe and Freeman, architects. Ashlar with rusticated plinth and slate roof. Neo-Baroque Style. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys with attic. 7-window range (2-1-2-2). Entrance in centre of main range in pedimented bay. Coupled polished granite columns to doorway. Arcaded round arched windows to first floor with polished granite shafts and balustrading forming balconette over chamfered angle with Market Street. Advanced 2-window range to right surmounted by tower with paired round arched openings. Advanced ground floor of this block has balustraded parapet and paired round arches to window and doorway with strapped ball finials. Return to Market Street an 8-window range (3-1-3-1) with acanthus capitals to windows of left hand range, and plain capitals to right but with decorated frieze. Entrance in single window advanced bay to right, with Venetian window with polished granite shafts over. Tripartite central window in right-hand bay, and Diocletian window in attic storey with relief decoration and arms in balustraded parapet. Venetian window in stressed single window bay towards left (balancing the entrance block), both of which have paired pilasters stressing angles. Full-height window to banking hall in rear elevation. Overhanging modillion eaves cornice, balustraded parapet with pediments with finials over the advanced bays. INTERIOR: main banking hall arcaded by giant columns, and with enriched plasterwork to walls and panelled ceiling. Top lit with stained glass in roof lights. (The Builder, 7 June 1873).
