Terrace of 3 houses with attached walls, railings and gate
piers throughout. 1805, in 2 stages of build, with balconies
c1820. Built for Captain Brissac. Stucco over brick with slate
roof, off-centre right stucco party-wall stack and
wrought-iron balconies and railings.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys, 8 first-floor windows (3:2:3). Central
cottage breaks forward. 2nd, 4th and 7th openings are blind,
otherwise 6-pane French windows with divided overlights and
margin-lights throughout. Windows have louvred shutters and
shutter hinges, except to Nelson Lodge. Crowning cornice and
low parapet with copings. Outer cottages have central
entrances, otherwise to left, 6-fielded-panel doors with lower
flush panels and narrow overlights.
INTERIOR: retain original joinery and plasterwork including
narrow-open-well staircase with stick balusters and wreathed
handrail to Nelson Cottage; cornices to outer houses have
Greek key motif.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: continuous balcony on first floor with
'Classical filigree of iron work', curved quarterings in
square motif; lattice uprights to right end at ground floor.
Nelson Cottage has 2 scrolled bootscrapers. Wall at left to
end pier, front low walls surmounted by railings, gatepiers
and scroll motif to gate. To centre wall abuts right house to
scrolled lozenge motif railings which continues across front
to piers, square on plan with pyramidal cap. Wall to right end
for approx 5m and railings across front have arrowhead bars
and dogbars with urn finials to stanchions; gate piers
(renewed) and gate with central panel of embellished rods.
HISTORICAL NOTE: part of a modest and very early C19
speculation, the cottages having been designed with front
gardens.
