Pair of semi-detached villas and attached railings. 1836 with later additions and alterations. Stucco over brick with hipped slate roof, end and party-wall stuccoed stacks, iron railings and verandahs. PLAN: double depth with outer side hallways. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys on basement and with attics, 6 first-floor windows (3:3). Stucco detailing includes outer and party-wall full-height pilasters which interrupts first-floor band, further pilasters through basement and ground floors between windows. Windows have tooled architraves. Crowning frieze and cornice. 6/6 sashes, taller to ground floor, all in plain reveals and with sills. Basement has 8/8 sashes. Flights of roll-edged steps to outer entrances, elliptically-arched openings with recessed 5-panel doors with sidelights and overlights with lattice glazing bars. Attic roof dormers have casement windows and 2/2 sash. INTERIOR: not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: ground-floor verandahs on plinths have Carron Company double-heart-and-anthemion motif balustrades and scrolled lozenge motif to uprights, with tent roofs. Railings to sides of steps have stick balusters. Renewed spearhead railings. HISTORICAL NOTE: built as part of the development of this area undertaken for Joseph Pitt in 1825-42, the general layout being designed by the architect John Forbes. All the listed buildings in Wellington Square form a good group, laid out around a central grassed area. (Blake S: Pittville: 1824-1860: Cheltenham: 1988-: 63).
