Villa and attached railings. 1851-4. Stucco over brick with hipped slate roof and end and rear stucco stacks and iron balcony. Double-depth plan with service range to rear. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys on basement with attic, 3 first-floor windows and with single-storey porch set back to right; 2-storey, single-bay range to rear. Stucco detailing includes quoins to angles, tooled architraves to windows, those to first floor have ears, shoulders and feet, those to ground floor have cornices on console brackets; first-floor moulded sill band, moulded band over first floor, crowning dentil cornice and with similar cornice to porch. First floor has 1/1 sashes; ground floor has 9- and 6-pane C20 windows and retains blind boxes. Concealed basement. Attic dormer to centre has casement windows. Entrance to right: flight of roll-edged steps to round-arched opening with tooled head on imposts, within are 4-panel double doors with fanlight with radial glazing. Right return of porch has 3-bay blind arcade with tooled arch on imposts. Rear retains 6/6 sashes and 12/12 staircase sash. INTERIOR: not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: balcony to ground floor on plinths have embellished rods. Railings to side of steps have low balustrade and end pier with cornice and carved basket of flowers. HISTORICAL NOTE: part of the Pittville development, completed after Joseph Pitt's death in 1842. Originally planned as Beaufort Place and laid out as West Spa Approach, c1844, it was not part of John Forbes's original plan for the estate. The houses along the drive were known originally as Nos 1-4 Beaufort Villas. Forms a group of similarly designed villas along West Approach Drive with Beaufort (qv), Cleeve House and Homewood (qv) and Park Gate (qv).
