Signal box. 1875 for the Great Northern Railway. Butt brick,
timber cladding, Welsh slate roof. Brick base with glazing bar
window in end.
EXTERIOR: signalman's room at 1st floor level with external
timber steps, is fully glazed to all 4 sides, with 6-paned
timber windows, 8 to sides and 4 to gable ends. Boarded
gables, with decorative carved bargeboard and timber finial. A
60-lever McKenzie and Holland frame replaced the original in
1894 and a gate wheel was installed.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
HISTORY: this is the oldest GNR signal box still in use, and
was built to control the northern junction of the main line
with the goods line near the West Street level crossing.
