Description

WORCESTER

SO8554NW FRIAR STREET
620-1/17/302 (West side)
22/05/54 Nos.46 AND 48

GV II

Erected as one house, now sub-divided into 2, numbered right
to left, described left to right. c1500-50 with later
additions and alterations. Probably for the Greene family.
Timber-frame and render with plain clay tile roof. Small brick
stack to front wall, left of centre, oversailing detail and
pot. Large brick and stone stack to rear right (north).
Rectangular plan of 2 unequal bays. Outshut with catslide roof
to rear, originally separate range to rear right now linked. 2
storeys and attic. 3 (1:2) first-floor windows. Only the
ground-floor storey posts, joists and bressumer to the jettied
first-floor are visible externally. First-floor windows are
2/2 sashes. No.48 has 6-pane shop window to left and glazed
door to right; No.44 has central glazed door flanked by 4-pane
shop windows, all C20. 2 renewed gabled dormers with paired
side-hung casements.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
HISTORICAL NOTE: Archival research shows that by 1674 there
was already a single bay timber framed building of smaller
proportions than the main house behind the chimney stack of
No.46. It is almost certainly later than the front range,
although its date and function are uncertain. It is suggested
that this became a separate dwelling and that Nos 46 and 48
were also divided up.
