House. c1730 with later additions and alterations including
ground floor shop front c1960s. Reddish-brown brick in Flemish
bond with stone pilasters, keystones and sills; timber
cornice; plain tile hipped roof hipped at front and left end
brick stack with pot. 3 storeys with attic, 3 first-floor
windows. Rusticated fluted pilasters to sides. 1/1 sashes to
first and second floors in near-flush frames and with flat
arches of gauged brick and fluted keystones, those to centre
windows with foliate decoration; moulded sills. Modillion
eaves and ovolo cornice. 2 attic dormers with 1/1 sashes.
Renewed glazed shop front with glazed entrance.
INTERIOR: ground floor renewed. Upper floors retain original
joinery and plasterwork including panelled shutters and
moulded cornices.
HISTORICAL NOTE: Forms part of a significant group of listed
buildings including Premises occupied by Lloyds Bank, Premises
occupied by Costa, Premises occupied by Bradford and Bingley
Building Society, Former Church of St Nicholas, Nos 20, 21 and
28 The Cross (qqv). These all form an important visual frame
for this entrance to the city.
