Forest End House
II
Large house, now subdivided into 3. Dated 1869 on foundation
stone.
MATERIALS: part brick in English bond with bands of dark
headers, part painted brick, part false timber framing with
painted render. Steeply pitched old tile roof with many gables
and with bands of fishscale tiles and crested ridge tiles.
PLAN: long irregular plan with tower on west.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys and attics. Several tall decorative
chimneys with offset heads and clay pots. Casement windows,
some with glazing bars and some with arched heads. North-west
entrance front is irregular. Brick ground floor, with
continuous pent roof over, false timber frame above,
decorative balconies and oriel windows.
INTERIOR: plain except No.1 which has an interesting interior
in Jacobean style. Panelled stair hall with ribbed plaster
ceiling, stained windows and dog-leg staircase with arcaded
balustrading. Leading off the staircase hall is the drawing
room with ornamental plaster ceiling with raised borders and
boldly carved chimneypiece with decorative overmantel coved
into ceiling. Dining room has overmantel plaster ceiling,
moulded ceiling cornice and Adam-style chimneypiece.
4-panelled doors in moulded architraves and cornices
throughout.
