Hall house, now house. C15 altered C16, altered and extended
mid and late C20.
MATERIALS: timber frame with part painted brick infill and
part painted render infill, extension is red brick in
stretcher bond. Old tile gabled roofs.
PLAN: probably H-plan formerly with central hall of 2 framed
bays and 2 crosswings. Left crosswing now missing but evidence
visible on west gable of continuation of timber frame. Now
T-plan of 1 x 3 framed bays with extension on north.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys. 4 chimneys, of which 2 are late C16 with
large battered bases, one of these, on north, now enclosed
within extension. C20 casement windows with glazing bars.
Entrance front to south has single bay projecting gable on
right, with jowled posts and long arch braces to cambered tie
beam, underbuilt in brick. Left hand section has two, 2-light
windows on first floor and one 2-light window on ground floor.
C20 hipped roof enclosed porch in angle with single light
window and wooden plank door on return. Return gable on west
has jowled posts with open mortices, 2 large arch braces to
large cambered tie and arched braced collar, rafters have
mortices for continuation of former wind braces. This was
probably the centre truss of the former hall. A large late C16
chimney in centre.
INTERIOR: much large section fine quality timber frame
visible. Square section plain joists on ground floor with
principal beam chamfered. Arch braced collar roof to former
hall. Plain arch braced king post roof exposed over square
stairwell in former crosswing. Large floor joists have been
cut to insert C20 open well staircase.
