PRESTON CANDOVER

Preston Candover War Memorial

II

War Memorial. 1919. Designer unknown. Portland stone.
DESCRIPTION: this memorial comprises a wayside cross on a tapering octagonal shaft with broach-stops, set on a square fielded pedestal which stands on a three-stepped octagonal base. The chamfered arms of the cross lead to octagonal finials. On the front of the cross is a bronze sword; on the front and sides of the pedestal are bronze inscription panels.
HISTORY: apparently unveiled in 1919, this memorial commemorates the nineteen men of this downland village who fell in the World Wars. It is distinctly reminiscent of Sir Reginald Blomfield's 'Cross of Sacrifice' design, which is such a familiar feature of military cemeteries laid out by the Imperial War Graves Commission.
