OTLEY
FARNLEY LANE (Off)
West Lodge and Otley Lodge and associated walls, gate pillars and gates

28-MAY-04

II

Two lodges and associated walls, gate pillars and gates, now partly in residential use with C20 additions. Probably late C18, possibly by John Carr. Two small square stone-built lodges, with connecting stone walls, pillars and wrought iron gates, at the western edge of the Farnley estate.

Left hand lodge (West Lodge) of coursed dressed gritstone with projecting rusticated quoins, under a hipped stone slate roof with ball finial at apex and a single chimney stack on north face. Finely moulded eaves cornice.
East elevation: central doorway (modern door)with architrave, keystone and projecting flat stone cornice. Approached by three steps flanked by low stone walls with carved parapets. Above doorway, carved sandstone coat of arms of the Fawkes family, dated 1618.
South elevation: central window with fifteen-pane modern light. Fawkes family coat of arms carved in sandstone above window cornice, dated 1618. The coats of arms are not contemporary with the lodges and are either re-used or possibly C18 fakes. West elevation blank, and north elevation is obscured by modern extension. This is single storey, stone built with hipped stone slate roof, C20, excluded from listing.

Right hand lodge is mirror image of left hand lodge but without modern extension, door and window, and is unoccupied. Both are offset to road, and are joined by sweeping stone walls which extend ouwards towards the road and inwards towards each other. They end in gritstone pillars with heavily chamfered rusticated ashlars providing a stepped appearance, square, moulded capitals with cornice and pyramidal roof, and scrolled brackets. Ornate, elegant wrought iron gates between pillars.
