Description

71/0/10027 Tomb of Guilio Salviati, Brookwood Cem
23-JUL-04 etery

GV II
Funerary monument to Giulio Salviati (d.1898). Mason unknown. Carrara marble kneeling angel set against a cross of pink granite: this stands on a tapering plinth of granite, with panels of mosiac no doubt produced by Salviati's own firm. The front panel carries an inscription, set within a laurel garland, while the side and rear panels comprise Neo-Roman floral groups. The monument is set within a granite kerb.
HISTORY: Salviati came from a Venetian dynasty of glass-workers, and operated the Regent Street-based branch of the family firm, which was responsible for some of the mosaic work in St Paul's Cathedral, such as the figures of prophets in the spandrels of the dome. Salviati committed suicide in his workshop. Salviati mosaics were also incorporated within the nearby Drake family mausoleum [q.v.].
