BUDE STRATTON

505/0/10020 A3072
01-OCT-10 Milestone opposite Brooks Garden Centr
e (NGR SS2398305435)

GV II
A late-C19 milestone standing on the south side of the A3072 opposite Brooks Garden Centre. The slate stone has straight edges, with a canted front surface containing traces of white paint. The deeply incised lettering, with some black paint remaining, reads: HOLSY 7 BUDE 2 ½ STRATTON I.

HISTORY
The milestone is one of a series of milestones between Bude and Highampton in Devon, erected in the 1870s when the road was improved. Of the group, three stones have survived in Devon (listed at grade II), and of the Cornish ones of this stretch, three survive, of which this is one. The milestone is marked on the Ordnance Survey map of 1880.
