Gate piers, gates, and
boundary walls to Ashlands

GV II

Gate piers with gates, boundary walls. c1850. Ashlar, dressed stone, cast iron. Set diagonally across corner of site where Belmont Road turns by Combe Down Junior School (qv), pair of ashlar piers, approx 2.5m high, on base, with double sunk arched panels, moulded capping, and blocking with hollow mould top, between these pair of early cast iron gates. To each side boundary walling in large square block, with plain stone coping, swept up to piers. To left wall curves away and across full width of site, immediately below School building. To right it curves to follow steeply dropping footpath, and returns across full width of site at bottom, on south side. Piers and walls remain important visual adjunct to this free standing villa.
