GV II
Two pairs of mews buildings with principal facades facing gardens of Raby Place with numbers corresponding to those of houses. 1823-1825 with C20 additions. By John Pinch the Elder.
MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar, double pitched slate and double Roman tile roofs.
PLAN: Double depth plans.
EXTERIOR: Two storeys. Original garden fronts had coped parapets, cornices, ground floor platbands, two horizontal moulded panels to first floor, door to left of ground floor and window to right in arched recess. Ground floor street fronts are altered: large door openings, renewed with garage doors to most; some of the planked doors to loading bays on first floors have been replaced with modern windows. No.6 retains a continuous timber lintel over two pairs of full height planked double doors and wide planked door with tall eight-pane overlight to left.
INTERIORS: Not inspected.
HISTORY: Part of the Raby Place (or Church Street, as originally known) development of 1823, combining garden fronts of architectural presence and rear fronts expressive of their original function as stables and coach houses. Pinch's design for the garden elevations of the coach houses was included on the original conveyances of leases for the houses.
