Elaborate solid urn. C18. Bath limestone. Writhing serpents to each side, curve from shoulder to flat top. Lip and base of urn are gadrooned, shoulder has intertwining leaves over basket weave frieze, recessed cylindrical shaft has acanthus leaf scrolls flanking raised circle to one side and dancing figures to other, narrow, gadrooned circular base rests on three-stepped square plinth on larger three-stepped circular plinth.
HISTORY: The date of its introduction into the park is unknown. This urn has become detached from its original pedestal. A good example of the sort of wares C18 masons yards were producing in considerable quantities, and exporting elsewhere in the country. Victoria Park was laid out in 1830 on the former Barton Fields, an area of common land and was opened by the Duchess of Kent with her daughter, Princess Victoria, on October 23rd 1830. It was the country's first municipal park.
