Description

BROAD STREET
(West side)

No.3
05/08/75

GV II

Shop. Mid C17, refronted C18, restored C20.
MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar, steep single pitched pantile roof. Timber frame rear structures.
PLAN: Single depth plan with rear additions.
EXTERIOR: Two storeys, four window front. Coped parapet, wide joints to ashlar paired six/nine pane sash windows without horns to first floor, those in range to left stepped very slightly forward with roll-moulded arises. C20 shop. The rear elevation is of note for retaining some of the C17 timber-framed structure with brick in-filling.
INTERIOR: Not inspected, but known to retain a C17 timber roof structure within the present roof space.
HISTORY: The survival of C17 fabric is very unusual within the Bath context, where pre-Georgian survival is very slight. This endows the remaining elements of the structure with particular interest.
SOURCES: RCHME Report on 3-4 Broad Street in National Monument Record (ref. 33208).
