House, now flats. c1786 with C19 alterations. Attributed to John Palmer.
MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar to front, render to exposed flank wall to right, rubble with ashlar extension to rear. Double pile parapeted mansard roof, Welsh slate to front, triple Roman tiles and Welsh slate to rear, coped party wall to right with ashlar stack to front range, similar axial stack to rear right, both with some early clay pots. Staircase to rear.
EXTERIOR: Three storeys attic and basement, three window front. First floor has three six/six sashes in plain reveals with lowered stone sills; second floor has three similar windows. Ground floor has two similar windows to right, six panel door with raised moulded panels with applied bead with simple fanlight and pennant step in round headed plain reveal; two steps to pennant paved crossover with C19 cast iron footscraper. Basement has two six/six sashes in plain reveals with stone sills, C20 timber reveal and door infilling under crossover, pennant faced painted area steps. One double and one single dormer with six/six sashes. Weathered sill band to first floor and second floor cut through by lowered windows; moulded eaves cornice and coped parapet with lead hopperhead to right. Rear elevation had one+one/two storey ashlar extension with six/six sash to first half landing off staircase to right, two story rendered addition of triangular plan to centre, plate glass sashes with wrought iron balconettes.
INTERIOR: Not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: Attached wrought iron railing with urn tops and urn finial to left, missing to right, on limestone bases.
HISTORY: Developed in conjunction with Portland Place (qv) by John Hensley; Nos 12-15 Burlington Street, Nos 1-4 Portland Place and Nos 17-20 Portland Place on leasehold land demised to John Hensley 30 March 1782 for three lives by legatees of Morford's Estate and let out on building leases 25 March, 24 June and 31 October 1785; East side of Burlington Street and Portland Place on freehold land belonging to Hensley conveyed to Hensley and William Phillips by Dupert family 1 and 2 January 1772 and then by lease and release 23 and 24 June 1783 from Hensley, Phillips and their trustee to Daniel Tanner as trustee for Hensley alone.
