House, now flats. c1786 with C19 and C20 alterations. Attributed to John Palmer.
MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar to front, rubble to lower part of basement, rubble to rear; double pile parapeted mansard roof, Welsh Slate to front and rear, with two ashlar stacks with some early clay pots on coped party wall to right. Staircase to rear.
EXTERIOR: Three storeys, attic and basement, single bay tripartite-window front. First floor has three plate glass horned sashes, narrower to left and right, in surround. Second floor has similar six/six horned sash flanked by plate glass sashes in plain reveals with continuous C19 timber blind box. Ground floor has to centre three plate glass horned sashes similarly grouped in plain reveals with continuous stone sill, to centre in round headed shallow recess to form quasi-Venetian window, to right similar shallow recess of door height. To left six panel door with flush beaded, fielded and glazed panels in bevelled plain reveal with one pennant step, pennant paved crossover flush with pavement. Two six/six sashes in plain reveals with continuous stone sill and wrought iron window guards, crossover infilled with ashlar with plank door and small window projecting beyond crossover under stone-paved roof, limestone area steps with pennant insets and wrought iron handrail. C20 windows in double dormer. Weathered sill bands to first floor and second floor; moulded eaves cornice and coped parapet with lead hopperhead shared with No.7 Burlington Street (qv) to left. Rear elevation has six/six sashes, to first floor with wrought iron balconette, one and half storey asbestos-clad extension off staircase has six/six sash to first half landing, lead hopperhead at eaves to right.
INTERIOR: Not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: Attached wrought iron railings and gate with urn tops on limestone bases adjoin crossover to left at splayed angle.
HISTORY: Developed in conjunction with Portland Place (qv) by John Hensley; Nos 12-15 Burlington Street, Nos 1-4 Portland Place and Nos 17-20 Portland Place on leasehold land demised to John Hensley 30 March 1782 for three lives by legatees of Morford's Estate and let out on building leases 25 March, 24 June and 31 October 1785; East side of Burlington Street and Portland Place on freehold land belonging to Hensley conveyed to Hensley and William Phillips by Duperee family 1 and 2 January 1772, and then by lease and release 23 and 24 June 1783 from Hensley, Phillips and their trustee to Daniel Tanner as trustee for Hensley alone.
