House, now flats. c1786, with early C19 porch and late C19 and C20 alterations. Attributed to John Palmer. Built by Richard Hewlett.
MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar to front, rubble to basement below windows, rubble to exposed flank wall to left and to rear. Double pile parapeted mansard roof, Welsh Slate to front and rear with coped party wall with two ashlar stacks to left. Staircase to front.
EXTERIOR: Three storeys, attic and cellar, three window front. First floor has three six/six sashes in plain reveals, to centre and left with wrought iron balconettes; second floor has three similar sashes with wrought iron balconettes, small C20 window to right. Ground floor has to left two four/four horned sashes in splayed reveals with stone sills and wrought iron balconettes, to right one and a half storey ashlar porch covering crossover has pair doors each with six small moulded panels in moulded architrave with pair reeded console brackets supporting cornice hood, porch has Tuscan angle pilasters supporting to front and sides, full entablature with blocking course above cornice. Left side of porch has small C20 window to ground floor and small sash with margined glazing above both with stone sills in stepped surrounds and with double recessed panels below, right side of porch has blind window with stone sill with double recessed panels above and below. Basement has two two/two horned sashes in plain reveals with stone sill with wrought iron window guards with shaped tops, C20 door in ashlar infilling under doorstep, C20 area steps. Double dormer with plate glass sashes. Band course over ground floor, sill bands to first floor and second floor; modillion eaves cornice and coped parapet. Rear elevation has four/four sashes to ground floor and first floor, six/six sash to first floor left, three grouped plate glass sashes, narrower to left and right, one double and one single dormer, small C20 extension.
INTERIOR: Not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: Attached wrought iron railings and gate with urn tops on limestone bases.
HISTORY: Developed in conjunction with Portland Place (qv) by John Hensley; Nos 12-15 Burlington Street, Nos 1-4 Portland Place and Nos 17-20 Portland Place on leasehold land demised to John Hensley 30 March 1782 for three lives by legatees of Morford's Estate and let out on building leases 25 March, 24 June and 31 October 1785; East side of Burlington Street and Portland Place on freehold land belonging to Hensley conveyed to Hensley and William Phillips by Duperee family 1 and 2 January 1772 and then by lease and release 23 and 24 June 1783 from Hensley, Phillips and their trustee to Daniel Tanner as trustee for Hensley alone.
