House, now day nursery and flats. c1777 with C19 and C20 alterations. By John Wood the Younger.
MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar to front, rendered to rear, double pile parapeted mansard roof, Welsh slate to front and rear, coped party wall to left with two ashlar stacks with some early clay pots.
PLAN: Staircase to front.
EXTERIOR: Three storeys, attic and basement, three-window range. First floor has three plate glass sashes in splayed ovolo moulded architraves with friezes and cornices, lowered moulded stone sills on console brackets. Second floor has three six/six sashes in ovolo moulded architraves with stone sills. Ground floor has two plate glass sashes in splayed reveals with stone sills to left, to right six-panel door with flush reeded, fielded and glazed panels in moulded stone doorcase with cyma moulded architrave, moulded cornice on console brackets forming hood over; pennant paved crossover with wrought iron footscraper flush with pavement, small single pane window in plain reveal with stone sill to right of door. Basement has two six/six sashes in plain reveals with stone sills, C20 door and glazed screen in ashlar infilling under crossover, limestone area steps refaced in concrete with wrought iron handrail. Double dormer with horned two/two sashes. Band course over ground floor, modillion eaves cornice and coped parapet. Rear elevation has two/two and plate glass sashes to ground and first floors, six/six sashes with remnants of C19 continuous shutter box.
INTERIOR: Basement inspected by Bath Council 1982. Fine fireplace surround with classic features, probably inserted.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: Attached wrought iron railings and gate with shaped heads on limestone bases. Bronze plaque attached to ground floor centre front records HERE LIVED/ADMIRAL/SIR SYDNEY W SMITH/1772-1774 B1764 D1840. Smith¿s most famous action was off Acre during the Egyptian Campaign of 1799.
