House to west end of irregular terrace of villas on hillside north of London Road. Late C18, refronted to south and west 1794 by John Palmer.
MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar south and west facades, rubblestone to rest, slate roof with moulded stacks.
PLAN: Irregular double depth plan.
EXTERIOR: Two storeys, attic and lower ground floor, symmetrical three-window front to west entrance side. West and south fronts have coped parapet, modillion cornice, glyph frieze articulated by foliate blocks, ground floor sill band and Vitruvian scroll band over ground floor. Three/three-pane sash windows to first floor, six/six-pane sashes to rest, many with horns. Double two-panel outer doors to plain projecting stone porch and half-glazed four-panel inner door with window above flanked by Venetian windows with radial glazing bars to tops, those to right have painted glazing bars to blind side lights. South garden front has full height segmental bay with three windows to each floor. Rear east wing, now Hayes Mount Cottage has six/six-pane sash window to first floor semi-elliptical recess below now with garage door.
INTERIORS: Converted to flats. Cantilevered stone staircase, moulded door surrounds, arched window surrounds, panelled shutters remain in situ but extensively altered otherwise.
HISTORY: A formerly edge-of-town villa with refined exteriors, designed in a highly fashionable Adam-inspired idiom. Harcourt Masters's map of 1793 showed that the house possessed very large gardens to the front at that time.
