GV II

Terrace of shops with accommodation over. 1883, but incorporating in Nos.94 and 96 pair of probably early C19 houses. By CE Davis.
MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar, Welsh slate roofs hidden from street except for Nos.94 and 96.
PLAN: Terrace of balanced design and double depth plan.
EXTERIOR: Three storeys, each front identical apart from first floor window heads. Ground floor has row of almost unaltered 1883 shopfronts divided by stone pilasters with console capitals, some of narrow timber mullions have been removed giving larger sheets of plate glass. Doorways to right. Continuous sill band to first floor. Single large tripartite window to first floor with stone mullions and transom, these stand proud of plain sashes operating behind them. Windows have alternate pediment and cornice heads. Second floor windows are paired to each house with sill band, plain sashes, on each house framed by plain pilasters. Entablature, cornice, parapet, roof not visible except for low mansard to Nos.94 and 96. Ashlar stacks with pots. South elevation of No.94 has two framed panels to each floor with one six/six sash on first floor. North elevation of No.106 has blind window. Rear elevations plain except that earlier date of Nos.94 and 96 can clearly be seen.
INTERIOR: No.106 was inspected and found to have no features of special interest.
HISTORY: Two builds are given away by different plane and roof line of Nos.94 and 96, as well as their end and rear elevation. Otherwise, an eclectic parade of shops in the City Architect's Characteristic Free Classical style.
