Terrace house. c1790-1793 with C19 and C20 alterations. By John Palmer.
MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar to front, painted to ground floor, painted rubble to basement, ashlar and rubble to rear. Double pile parapeted roof, mansard built up to full third floor to front, covering not visible, Welsh slate and double Romans to rear, coped party wall with two ashlar stacks to right. Staircase to rear.
EXTERIOR: Four storeys and basement, single-bay three-window front. First floor has three grouped plate glass horned sashes, narrower to left and right, in splayed reveals with continuous wrought iron balconette. Second floor has three similar four/four, six/six, four/four sashes in plain reveals with continuous stone sill. Third floor has two six/six sashes in plain reveals with stone sills. Ground floor has two plate glass horned sashes in splayed reveals with continuous stone sill to right, to left six-panel door with flush, fielded and glazed panels in stone doorcase, probably early C19, with moulded architrave and hood with reeded edge on console brackets, one step to pennant paved crossover with cast iron footscraper. Basement has two six/six sashes in plain reveals with continuous stone sill, half-glazed door with overlight in ashlar infilling under crossover, C20 area steps. Timber bressumer and stone band course over ground floor, weathered sill band to first floor, frieze and moulded cornice, formerly at eaves, over second floor, moulded eaves cornice and coped parapet. Rear elevation partially visible, six/six sash to second floor, plate glass sashes to first floor and dormer to first floor with wrought iron balconettes, timber cantilever lavatory, lead hopperhead.
INTERIOR: Not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: Attached wrought iron railings and gate with cast urn heads on limestone bases.
HISTORY: Part of incomplete St James's Square development on land leased by Fielder, King, Hewlett and Broom from Sir Peter Rivers Gay 25 March 1790; Marlborough Street forms one of the four diagonal approached to St James's Square.
