Houses, now hotel. 1740, altered 1887. By John Wood the Elder, altered by CE Davis.
PLAN: Double depth plan, but with rear extensions. Apparently originally two five-bay houses (2 and 3), but now one hotel with No.2 also (qv). Thus ten-bays with two doorcases each placed centrally to five-bays.
EXTERIOR: Three storeys, attic and basement. Platband at first floor level. Right hand doorway has Ionic half-columns with pediment (Wood), and six-panel door. Left hand doorway has large Tuscan porch with pediment projecting into upper storey (Davis). Wrought iron area railings. All windows plain C19 sashes (Davis) with plain architrave surrounds, those to first floor have cornice heads, all have dropped sills. Dentil cornice, parapet, mansard roof, ten flat topped dormers with plain sashes, ashlar end stacks without pots.
INTERIORS: Not inspected, but much altered by Davis in 1887, as well as rear elevation to Pierrepont Place.
HISTORY: This building was converted by the City Architect in 1887 to be the Poor Law Union office, the previous one having been demolished when the Roman Great Bath was uncovered. A part of John Wood's uncompleted scheme for the Abbey Orchard, built 1740-1748.
