Description

HEDGEMEAD PARK
656-1/0/0 Bandstand

GV II

Bandstand. c1890.
MATERIALS: Cast iron and lead, rough ashlar base.
PLAN: Octagonal plan.
EXTERIOR: Battered base of bandstand projects eastward from revetment wall that runs from north to south through gardens. 8 cast iron cylindrical columns rising from square bases have ring moulding half-way up and small Ionic capitals below pierced scalloped fans that support ribbed pavilion roof and ball finial. All sides, except that to west, have simple railings of two horizontal bars connected to columns and central verticals by cube joints. Vertical rail to centre of each side has ball finial.
HISTORY: This may have been designed by TB Silcock, who laid out park in 1889, but more probably bought from a catalogue. SOURCES: [R. Gilding, `Historic Public Parks. Avon' (1997), 35-39].
