656-1/0/0

Nos.4 AND 5 (Formerly Listed as: HENRIETTA ROAD Nos 4 and 5 Henrietta Villas)
05/08/75

GV II

Pair of semi-detached houses. c1840.
MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar, shallow pitched slate roof with shaped brackets to wide eaves and central ridge stack.
PLAN: Double depth plan with set back entrance bays.
EXTERIOR: Three storeys with semi-basements, symmetrical five-window range including blind windows to party wall. Six/six-pane sash windows, second floor windows are up to eaves band. First floor windows have moulded architraves and continuous sill band, blind one to centre has cornice on consoles, those to entrance bays have panelled aprons flanked by piers. Ground floor cornice and entablature with fine guttae string follow contour of rectangular bays with clasping pilasters that continue above cornice to form dies to cast iron balustraded balconies. Central blind window has cornice and bracketed sill. Steps up to set back four-panel doors with margin paned overlights. No.4 to left has casement window in bay. No.5 has small balconette to window above door.
INTERIORS: Not inspected.
HISTORY: The road lies along the route of the old footpath connecting Bath and Bathwick. Originally this area was earmarked for a major development called Frances Square (marked on Chantry¿s plan of 1793, and on Donne¿s plan of 1810). After a substantial delay this suburban development, greatly reduced in density, was proceeded with in a characteristic Late Georgian manner. The villas are shown on Cotterell¿s 1851 plan of Bath, and are recorded as being "newly erected" in the Bath Guide for 1853. A print of 1844 (reproduced in Pound) shows a row of three similar villas which are probably Nos 3-6.
SOURCES: (Pound C: Genius of Bath-The City and its Landscape: Bath: 1986-: 68).
