Terrace house, now flats. c1790-93 with C20 additions. By John Palmer.
MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar to front, rubble to basement, ashlar and rubble to rear, Welsh slate double pile parapeted mansard roof with coped party wall with two ashlar stacks with some early clay pots to left. Staircase to rear.
EXTERIOR: Three storeys, attic and basement, three-window range. First floor has three six/six sashes in splayed reveals. Second floor has three similar sashes in plain reveals with stone sills. Ground floor has two similar windows to left; to right six-panel door with beaded, fielded and single glazed panels with cast iron wreath knocker in pedimented Doric doorcase, one step to pennant paved crossover with wrought iron foot-scraper. Basement has two six/six sashes in plain reveals with stone sills. C20 door and glazed screen in ashlar infilling under crossover, limestone area steps with wrought iron handrail. Double dormer with six/six horned sashes. Band course over ground floor, sill band to first floor, frieze, moulded eaves cornice and coped parapet. Lead hopperhead at eaves to right. Rear elevation partially visible. Early six/six sash to second floor, two storey parapeted ashlar extension. One double and one single dormer with horned six/six sashes. Lead hopperhead at eaves to left.
INTERIOR: Inspected by Bath council 1986. First floor has original elaborate ceiling and scroll soffits. Double doors plain early C19 fireplace. Original stairs with Doric newels. Front basement has triple fireplace and double dresser with cupboards either side of shelves. Georgian fireplace to rear.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: Attached wrought iron railings and gate with urn tops on limestone bases.
HISTORY: Part of incomplete St James's Square development on land leased by Fielder, King, Hewlett and Broom from Sir Peter Rivers Gay 25 March 1790; Great Bedford Street forms one of the four diagonal approaches to St James's Square; it was intended to continue to NE but never completed. Nos. 7-11 were destroyed by bombing in 1942.
