Terrace house. c1790-1793 with C19 and C20 alterations. By John Palmer.
MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar to front. Double-pile parapeted mansard roof with coped party wall with two ashlar stacks to left. Staircase to rear.
EXTERIOR: Three storeys, attic and basement. Three-window range. First floor has three two/two sashes in plain reveals with stone sills with wrought iron balconettes. Second floor has three six/six sashes in plain reveals with stone sills. Ground floor has two two/two sashes similar to first floor in plain reveals with stone sills to left. To right six-panel door with reeded, fielded and recessed panels in pedimented Doric doorcase with incised numeral 3, probably C19. One step to crossover paved with single pennant slab with pair of C19 cast iron footscrapers. Basement has two six/six sashes in chamfered reveals with continuous stone sill with wrought iron window guards with shaped heads. C20 door with overlight in ashlar infilling under crossover, no area steps. Double dormer with plate glass horned sashes with section of moulded architrave. Band course over ground floor, frieze, moulded eaves cornice and coped parapet. Rear elevation partially visible, early six/six and C19 sashes.
INTERIOR: Not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: Attached wrought iron railings with shaped and urn tops on limestone bases. Part of incomplete St James¿s Square development on land leased by Fielder, King, Hewlett and Broom from Sir Peter Rivers Gay 25 March 1790; Great Bedford Street forms one of the four diagonal approaches to St James's; it was intended to continue to NE but never completed. Nos. 7-11 were destroyed by bombing in 1942.
