House. Early C19 with C20 additions.
MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar to front, render to rear, Welsh Slate hipped parapeted roof with stone ridges with two axial stacks to rear.
PLAN: Single depth plan enclosed by other building (including St Andrew's School qv) to three sides, staircase to front.
EXTERIOR: Two storeys and basement, three-window range. First floor has three six/six-sashes in plain reveals, to left and centre with window guards, one small C20 window to centre left, ground floor has two similar windows with stone sills set within round headed panel recessed circa 3cm and continued below sill flanking eight-panel door to centre with reeded panels and fielded panels with voided corners with cast iron ring knocker set within reeded, timber surround with side panels and panel over with diamond pattern fretwork (cf. Cavendish Place, Park Street), decorative fanlight, all recessed slightly within round headed plain reveal, two Pennant steps with nosing. Basement has two C20 windows in plain reveals to right partially above ground with window guard glass block panel in pavement, to left with grating in pavement. Plinth starting from ground level to left to accommodate steep fall of ground to right, impost band linking ground floor openings, weathered sill band to first floor, moulded eaves cornice and coped parapet with die with recessed panel to centre. Rear elevation has small C20 window to first floor.
INTERIOR: Not inspected.
HISTORY: Part of the ground conveyed to Fielder, King, Hewlett and Broom(e) by Sir Peter Rivers Gay on 25 March 1790 on which St James's Square and adjoining streets were built; this plot remained undeveloped until 1817 when Manners' New and Correct Plan of Bath shows houses on sites of Nos 3-6 and Portland Chapel opposite.
