Description


A war memorial of 1920s date.

MATERIALS: constructed of granite on a stone slab base.

DESCRIPTION: the memorial is a freestanding cross with a square profile tapering column and wheel cross surmounting a square moulded plinth and base. The front face (north-east) of the plinth is inscribed in lead lettering: TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN MEMORY OF/ THE BRAVE MEN OF LOPEN/ FREDERICK HALL/ FRED PIDGEON/ ERNEST WILLIAM EDMONDS/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR/ COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914-1918. The north-west face has an inscription of 2016: ALSO/ BROTHERS/ GEORGE AND/ WILLIAM HENRY/ GREENHAM.

History


The memorial to the men of Lopen who fought and died in the First World War was erected in the 1920s. It is shown on the Ordnance Survey Map of 1929.
