History

Weeley War Memorial was constructed by Messrs Garrett and Haysom of Southampton to commemorate the 10 local servicemen who fell in the First World War. It was unveiled on 26 June 1920 by Brigadier-General G Metcalfe, Commander of the Royal Artillery 4th Division at Colchester. It was dedicated by Reverend F Beadel, Rector of Great Holland and the Chairman of Tendring Rural District Council. The names of the 12 fallen from the Second World War were added at a later date.

The west end of the rear wall of the memorial enclosure was damaged by a vehicle in 1997. In 2005, with the help of grant aid from War Memorials Trust, this damage was repaired. Further grant aid from War Memorials Trust in 2013 helped the memorial to be cleaned and conserved.

Reasons for Listing

Weeley War Memorial, which stands at the junction of Bentley Road and Clacton Road, is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on this local community, and the sacrifice it has made in the conflicts of the C20;
